Iraq Railways - The Role Of Steam

2-8-2 Z-class oil fired locomotive supplied by Ferrostaal AG of Essen

Sad though it is for many of us, there are no longer any steam locomotives operating in Iraq as part of the public rail network.

Steam did however play a vital part in the history and development of the Iraqi rail system and fortunately there are many photographs available to record the oart they played - a very small sample of which appears here.

It is also worthy of note that many of the steam engines used in years gone by have survived the passage of time and several can be seen standing 'sentinel' at various locations around the country.
