Iraq Railways - The Days Of The Orient Express

Baghdad Railway Station

Iraq Railways have witnessed many years of war and occupation dating back perhaps most noticeably to the 1920s when the British transported troops and goods from London to Baghdad.

Perhaps its best years however were the 1970s when many new trains were purchased and international schedules developed including routes from Baghdad to many capital cities in Europe including London, Paris and Berlin. This was a time when many Iraqis, and indeed other nationals, dreamed of being able to ride on the Orient Express.

This is a far cry from the railway of today in the aftermath of two gulf wars. Nevertheless, the Iraqi Republic Railway Company is working hard to get its international service up and running again and many believe that the dream of he Orient Express is not dead yet.
