Iraq Railways - The Presidential Train
Although Saddam Hussein did not consider it safe to travel by rail he nevertheless had his own private 23 coach French built train kept in a secret location for more than 30 years in a state of constant readiness.
The train, which was equipped to a high standard and included Italian curtains and cut glass chandeliers, was in fact only used once by Saddam Hussein shortly after he became president at the end of the 1970s. On this occasion the train was used for a short journey from Baghdad to Basra in the south of the country.
The train's air conditioned carriages, including offices, a library, living rooms, restaurants and luggage compartments has now been added to the public railway rolling stock and the train is back in public service.
